The word 'trench coat' penetrated in our vocabulary and our closets long time ago (exactly from 1901), but only few days ago I was curios enough to discover it's history. This 'ditch coat' was created by Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, submitted a design for an Army officer's raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office.
