Castle Maidens Adessa and I just returned to Helsinki from our first trip to Savonlinna with our mom. Savonlinna is a popular spot for summer visits due to its beautiful lake views and lively arts scene. My mom and I saw an opera (my first!) at St. Olaf's Castle ( Olavinlinna in Finnish) last night while Adessa slept off jet lag, and the three of us returned to the castle this morning to explore. Olavinlinna was built in 1475 by the reigning Swedes as a fortress to prevent Russia from conquering land in Eastern Finland. Medieval toilets stick out off of the sides of the towers.
