Never underestimate the power of a white shirt. I wear them all the time--and as simple as they are, they add a nice subtle thrown together chic-ness to my professional wardrobe. I'm not saying "go out and buy every single white shirt you can find," but...it won't hurt you to buy at least some of them.
When in doubt of what to wear with a skirt (or even a pair of pants), I always fall back on my collection of white blouses and shirts.
