They can be caused for a number of different reasons, but the involuntary response is a laughable sound - and miserable feeling. I tend to get the hiccups when sudden temperature shifts happen. Like walking from warm inside to cold outside and vice versa. Sometimes it's just one hiccup while I adjust, other times it sets off a tidal wave of hiccups that last until my ribs ache.
