I listened to a lot of Tori Amos back in the day. Though I was born too late to make the most of the ’90s, I certainly had a cargo-pants-and-ironic-Disney-sweatshirts phase. And the piano pop. Jeepers Christmas the piano pop. Is there anything at all more ’90s than sad, horny earth mamas with crimped hair? It was around this time that I was also very into Gregory Maguire; I maintain that the two of them are responsible for the persistent “denser = better” attitude that dogged my writing for so long.
