Things we don't learn in School
One of the very first posts I ever wrote on Rags against the Machine described academic wear and some of its peculiarities. As far as I know, this is the only photo of me in full gear--robe, hood, cap and tassel. The cap and gown was inherited from a former male colleague, which likely explains why it is so much longer than my daughter's. The cap is men's size too, 7 3/8, but it stays put without bobby pins. The hood designates the institution that granted my "terminal" degree, an MFA from the University of Montana.
