So I bought the dress pictured on the right off ebay ($35 ebay, $100+ retail). It's by a brand called Dzhavael Couture, which seems to be quite pricey! but I felt like I got a good deal on the dress. However the more I look at the construction, the more I felt confident that I could do something similar. The orange tie-dye shirt has always been a little short for my comfort. So it became a sacrifice for the bodice piece of the dress. The skirt portion was a recent sundress thrifted piece (in a size L, intended for sewing with), and the stripes from my pattern sacrificed shirt. Here is my first draft of actual construction.
