Girl in Translation
Wow! Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok is a work of fiction, but it's about a girl who comes to the United States and works in a sweatshop with her mother... and the author is a woman who came to the United States and worked in a sweatshop with her mother... so really one could infer that the descriptions of working conditions probably aren't totally fiction. Personally, I find it's easier for me to learn about history or other non-fiction topics if there's a little fiction or narrative mixed in. I find history painful to read, but I love a good historical fiction novel. If you're like me and want an easy entry into learning about sweatshops or the Asian American...
