Abandoned Hospital || 1940's October with Top Vintage Today's location is reminiscent of an old castle in Ireland, but actually we are still in New York City. Roosevelt Island was once a place of isolation, as patients were sent here for incurable diseases and insanity. The Octagon was once the "Lunatic Asylum" and is notorious for the mistreatment of it's residents. Our main backdrop today though is the abandoned Smallpox Hospital, built in 1854, appropriately built in Gothic Revival architecture. It is equally beautiful as it is eerie, and has been described "a picturesque ruin, one that could readily serve as the setting for a 19th century Gothic romance."
