The tradition started as a feast day in the Catholic Church sometime in the 17th Century. Now, it's an excuse to get drunk on a weeknight. I'm sure St. Patrick is honoured. What no one ever realizes is that, for the Church to implement an extra feast day during the season of Lent - a time of preparing for the death of Jesus Christ, and one of fasting - was a big deal. Feast days, traditionally, were on the Sabbath, usually Sunday in the modern church...
